Juror, Keith Carter’s Remarks
“Slimming down well over one thousand submitted images to a mere fifty, is essentially a thankless task. Basically you end up making a lot of talented people unhappy, and jettisoning a lot of terrific work. The good news is that the art of photography, traversing documentary, travel, conceptual, portraits, social issues, and electronic media, are all alive and well - and flourishing here in Texas.
The richness and diversity of the photographic arts was on full display as both my long time studio assistant Cathy and I sifted time and again, through the myriad epiphanies, interests, whimsy, obsessions, and experiences of fiercely intelligent, creative TPS members. In the end, we selected images that spoke to us, based both on the history of photography, and its future – images where the camera was used as an extension of the intellect, a witness to contemporary culture, and the occasional ruthless eye.”
